Richmond Marathon #48

The Richmond Marathon turned out to be one of my best race experiences yet. Kim and I met up with our friend Skip at the start, but I have to admit, I was a little crabby on the way there. Kim had only brought gloves for himself, and it was colder than expected.

When we got to the start, we stood in line for the port-o-lets, only to have some elite runners cut in front of us. We were both like, "What the hell?" It was so chilly that Kim and I couldn’t bring ourselves to take off our throwaway pants at the starting line. We ended up running with them until about mile 3, where we finally stopped to pull them off.

Somewhere along the course, I met Liz, a runner determined to qualify for Boston. She was running so strong, and I told her I wouldn’t let her leave my side. I made it my mission to help her achieve her goal. Liz pushed hard, but around mile 23, we got separated.

After finishing the race, I looked for her and was thrilled to find out she did it—she qualified for Boston! I was so proud of her.

What I love most about traveling and running marathons is the amazing people we meet along the way. Liz and I have kept in touch since Richmond, and this race will always hold a special place in my heart.
