Roxbury Marathon #30

The Roxbury Marathon in 2015 was a completely different experience compared to the snowstorms and freezing conditions I’ve encountered in the past.

This year, December graced us with unusually warm weather, making it feel more like a late autumn run than the typical winter slog. For the first time, I ran Roxbury in shorts and a t-shirt, and the sunshine and mild temperatures gave the entire race a refreshing and almost celebratory atmosphere.

One of the most memorable moments of the day was meeting a woman on the course who was running her very first marathon. I couldn’t believe it—of all the marathons to choose, she had picked Roxbury, a notoriously challenging course with its hilly terrain and no-frills setup. I admired her courage and determination. She ran with us for most of the race, sticking by our side until the final loop. Her strength and resolve were truly inspiring.

As we finished, Kim and I joined her husband at the sidelines to wait for her and cheer her on. Watching her cross that finish line was an incredible moment. It was a reminder of how much marathons are about community and shared triumphs.

This year, everything about the race just felt right. The warm weather, the camaraderie, and the positive energy carried me through the course. I even managed to finish under four hours, achieving a Boston Qualifying time. That was the cherry on top of an already beautiful day. Roxbury might be a tough course, but on days like this, it’s an absolute joy. 2015 will always stand out as one of my favorite Roxbury Marathons.
