Boston Marathon - #23

The Boston Marathon is an experience like no other, and running it for the second time was everything I hoped it would be. Having learned valuable lessons from my 2014 race, I was determined to make this year’s experience even better. Kim and I drove the course on our way into Boston, which helped me mentally prepare for the challenge ahead.

Once again, we had the privilege of coaching the Fleet Feet program, and with the Adidas 360 program perks, the weekend was filled with incredible experiences—organized happy hours, receptions, coach buses to the start, and a fantastic post-marathon reception with food, massages, and drinks.

In 2014, the warm weather made the race tough for me, so I prayed for cooler conditions this time. My prayers were answered—and then some! Instead of heat, race day brought cool, rainy weather. Right before we got off the bus at the start, the organizer handed me a Boston hat, which quickly became my favorite running hat.

At the expo, I attended a course overview led by Ryan Hall. I hung on to every word he said, particularly his advice: “If you get to the 10K mark and you just set a PR, you’ve gone out too fast.” I made sure to keep my pace in check, glancing at my watch to stay on track as I reached the 10K mark.

The race felt fantastic. I powered through the hills in Newton, and when I saw the iconic Citgo sign, I knew I was going to make it. Crossing the Boston Marathon finish line is a feeling like no other—the overwhelming sense of accomplishment and the deafening cheers of the crowd create an unforgettable moment.

After the race, I headed to the hotel and joined the post-marathon reception. I remember proudly telling a man, “I think I just set a PR at this race.” He was stunned, replying, “Wow, no one ever PR’s in Boston.” That made me even prouder of my accomplishment. When it was my turn for a post-race massage, I couldn’t stop shaking from the cold. The massage therapist asked if I’d ever tried Reiki. I hadn’t, but he performed it on me, and somehow I warmed up instantly. It felt like magic.

This year’s Boston Marathon was an incredible experience, from the training to the race itself and the recovery. I hope to qualify again next year and relive this amazing event!
