Goofy Challenge #22

Kim and I decided to embark on a new adventure—the Goofy Challenge in Florida. This unique race consists of a half marathon followed by a full marathon the next day.

One thing I didn’t expect was just how cold the weather would be! We stayed at my friends Walter and Gwen’s condo for the race, which was a great decision. It gave us the comforts of home and the ability to cook our own meals.

Race morning was freezing! We bundled up and made our way to the start line. Since this event is held at the Disney parks, the race starts at the incredibly early time of 3:30 a.m. Waking up at 2 a.m. for the start was no easy task. Before the race began, I wanted to use the port-o-lets, and Kim and I waited in line. We noticed one of them must not have been anchored properly—when someone went in, it rocked back and forth, and we worried it might tip over!

Finally, the race started. It was still dark, but the beauty of the Disney lights served as a magical backdrop.

We took some photos at the staged areas along the course, which added to the fun. I was a bit disappointed that we didn’t see any animals in the zoo portion of the course—they must have still been sleeping. Later we found out that they didn’t let the animals out due to the cold snap.

The finish was nothing short of spectacular. We ended in Epcot Center, where the Olympic torches were lit, creating an incredible atmosphere. That night, we celebrated in the Disney park, but unfortunately, it was pouring rain. Walter saved the day by buying us rain ponchos. We stayed dry at a Mexican restaurant and maybe had one too many margaritas!

The next morning, reality hit hard as we had to pack up early and drive to the airport. I don’t think I’d do another Goofy Challenge. While the experience was memorable, the logistics were challenging, and waking up so early both days was tough. Still, it was an adventure to remember!
