Hyannis Marathon #40

The Hyannis Marathon was Kim's idea. It wasn’t a race I was looking forward to, especially since it was in the winter near the ocean. Kim mentioned that when he ran it the first time, there were sections where the wind from the ocean blasted him. Great—sounds like a fun time, right?

We arrived at the expo and picked up our bibs. Bill Rodgers and Frank Shorter were there signing posters, so we chatted with them for a bit. The race itself wasn’t as horrible as Kim had described. Kim was pretty chatty with some of the other runners, but I kept reminding him that we were running way too fast. I just sucked it up and tried to keep up with him.

I remember looking down and seeing someone’s Fireball nip and then the song "Fireball" popped into my head, which gave me a nice beat to run to. When I crossed the finish line, I was shocked to see that I had run a 3:39 without much effort.

After the race, we waited inside a heated conference room where they did the awards. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that I placed 3rd in my age division!

Would I come back? God, I hope not!
