Mad Marathon #35

If you had asked me back in 2012 if I would ever run the Mad Marathon again, my answer would have been a firm "No." Known as one of the hilliest marathons out there, this course is already a challenge on its own. Add in the fact that it takes place in July—when the heat is relentless—and it becomes an even tougher experience.

But then came Kim. He was closing in on his 50th marathon and wanted San Francisco to be his milestone race. That meant running the Mad Marathon to stay on track. Somehow, he convinced me to join him, and despite my reservations, I agreed.

We stayed at the most charming English-themed inn, complete with Beatles memorabilia. The owners were beyond accommodating, even offering to make us breakfast at 5 a.m. to fuel us for race day. The night before the race, it poured rain, leaving us uncertain about the course conditions for the next day.

When race morning arrived, the temperatures were still relatively cool. Kim and I set off feeling strong, tackling the hills with surprising ease. The course remained as challenging as expected, but we pushed through. In the end, we finished with a solid time of 3:56, and to my surprise, I even placed 2nd in my age division!

Would I run the Mad Marathon again? Nope! But I have to admit—it was an unforgettable experience.
