Big Sur Marathon #33

The Big Sur International Marathon is a challenging 26.2-mile race that takes place on Highway 1, running from Big Sur to Carmel, California. The race is known as "Running on the Ragged Edge of the Western World.

I was so excited to run with our CT friends so they could experience the beauty of the Pacific Coast. This was our second Big Sur Marathon. I rented a beautiful house in Carmel with Angie, Reggie, Diane, and Mike. We flew Southwest from CT to California, and Diane was her usual hilarious self. She boarded the plane first to secure our seats together and even snagged extra snacks for all of us! After landing in San Jose, we drove to Big Sur.

This year, the drive was during the day, and it was much more pleasant than our first experience.

Race morning, we boarded the early bus to head to the start. Kim and I knew from our first Big Sur Marathon that it’s chilly while waiting, so we dressed warmly. When we arrived, there were barely any runners around—it was cold and early. Kim lay down on the heat shield, and I snuggled next to him. Soon after, Reggie joined us, and we all fell asleep, only to wake up to a sea of runners ready to start the race.

The race began, and we were off on the most beautiful course. Mike, Reggie, Kim, and I stuck together for the majority of the race. We stopped a few times to refuel and took some of the most breathtaking photos of the stunning views.

Toward the end of the race, Reggie started to tire and got a little frustrated. I kept trying to distract her with conversation, but she finally said, “It’s not working, Jeanne,” so I decided to give her some space.

As we approached the last mile, Kim chimed in, “Reggie, look, I can see the flags at the finish!” Reggie, not missing a beat, looked at me and said, “I don’t see the f’ing flags.” I couldn’t help but laugh inside, even though I was relieved when she crossed that finish line!

Diane was there at the finish, snapping photos of us. It was such an amazing experience, and I loved every moment of this marathon. I can’t wait for next year!
