Vermont City Marathon #34

This was my third time running the Vermont City Marathon, and this year, Angie was back, and we also convinced our friend Skip to join us. Little did we know that this year would be known as the hottest Vermont City on record.

I had a plan to get to People’s Bank before they closed, as they gave out free marathon posters—something that would have cost $20 at the race expo. Our ride was going smoothly until we were delayed by an accident. I started to get nervous that we'd miss the posters, so I called the bank to confirm when they closed. Luckily, traffic cleared up, and we managed to get the poster just before they closed!

As the day went on, we started checking the weather, and Vermont was experiencing an unexpected heatwave for that time of year. Race organizers assured runners that extra ice and water would be available on the course to help manage the heat.

The race started, and Kim and I decided to pace ourselves conservatively, knowing the temperature was rising quickly. We reached the final part of the course on the bike path when the volunteers started yelling, “Black Flag!” They were announcing that the race was over and telling us to stop running. I was like, “There’s no way I’m stopping now—I have less than a mile to go!” We ignored the warnings and continued on our way.

Eventually, we crossed the finish line, but some runners were stopped and bussed back if they hadn’t made it to certain sections of the course in time. They had set up children’s pools filled with ice water for runners to cool off, which was much needed in the heat.

It was a hot year, but I was glad I was able to finish the race and, of course, get my marathon poster!
