This year, when we ran Big Sur, we invited our Connecticut crew and rented a house with Suzy, Skip, Diane, Reggie, and Angie.
Poor Angie was injured and hadn’t been able to train much, but she was determined to muscle through and run the race. Skip and Reggie signed up for the relay, while Suzy took on the full marathon.

We made a trip to Goodwill to get warm throwaway clothes for the chilly start. Little Suzy found the cutest bathrobe, and Skip picked something he was reluctant to part with—even though it was meant to be tossed!
On race morning, we boarded the buses to the start. To our surprise, the weather wasn’t as bad as expected—it was chilly, but manageable. The race began, and Kim and I felt strong from the get-go. This year, everything seemed to align: the nutrition, the weather, and our energy levels were all spot-on.
When we hit the 25-mile mark, we saw our friend Buddy cheering us on. He yelled, “You guys are killing it! You’re going to break 4 hours!” That was the push we needed to finish strong.
After crossing the finish line, we headed to the finish tent to celebrate and catch up with our friends. Everyone had a great experience, except for poor Angie, who pushed through despite being in so much pain.
That evening, we went out to dinner and ended up spending more on one meal than we did on groceries for the entire week at the Airbnb!
Big Sur truly holds a special place in my heart. I love this marathon, and I can’t wait for next year!
